Julie stood outside of Colleen's front door. She knew she was home because she saw her car, but she couldn't bring herself to knock. She needed a few more moments to think about what she was going to say.

She and Dawson had had a long talk last night, and he had made her see that overreacting was only going to cause a rift between her and her daughter. She definitely didn't want that.

But, at the same time, she was hurt. She didn't understand why Colleen didn't trust her enough to tell her. And a part of her was sad that she had missed out on her oldest daughter's wedding, even if it was in Vegas at one of those tiny little chapels.

"Mom?" She turned to see Colleen standing on the other side of the flower bed, garden gloves on her hands. For a moment, she had a flashback when Colleen was a little girl playing in mud puddles in their yard back in Atlanta. She had always loved working outside in the dirt.

"Oh, hey. I was about to knock on the door."

"Is everything okay?” After Dawson had told her the news last night, he had called Tucker and asked him not to say anything. They wanted to give Colleen and Julie a chance to talk without Colleen realizing her mother already knew. It was all very confusing.

"Yes, everything is fine."

Colleen dropped her gloves on the ground and walked closer. "How is Madison?"

"Doing a lot better. Resting mostly today."

"Good. Come in, and we’ll have some tea."

Julie followed her into the house, and walked over to the kitchen, sitting down at one of the high barstools in front of the breakfast bar.

"I like the new paint," Julie said, pointing out the new light blue color Colleen had painted in her kitchen. It was a small space, but decorated very nicely.

"Thanks. Here you go," Colleen said, sliding a glass of sweet tea in front of Julie.

"Thanks, honey."

"You seem kind of down. Is everything all right?" Colleen asked, leaning against the counter with her forearms resting on it.

"I wanted to talk to you about something that happened yesterday."

"Yesterday? What is it?"

“Now, don't get mad at Tucker."

"What did Tucker do?"

"Well, he thought you had come to the bookstore and told me some important information."

Colleen’s eyes grew wider. "I don't know what you mean…"

"He was trying to be traditional and chivalrous, so he went to talk to Dawson. And then Dawson came to the hospital and thought I knew."

She put her face in her hands and groaned loudly. “Nooo….”

“I have to say I was very surprised,” Julie said softly.

Colleen put her forehead on the counter. “I’m so sorry, Mom.”

Julie reached over and touched her arm. “Look at me.”

She slowly stood up and looked at her mother, her face all scrunched up. “Do you hate me?”

“Of course not. It was just… shocking. I guess I assumed you’d want a formal wedding with your family, at least.” She was trying so hard to maintain her composure and not cry or yell.
